Greene County Facts

Greene County, Indiana, was founded in 1861, and is named for General Nathanael Greene (1742-1786). General Greene was a hero of the American Revolution, forcing British General Cornwallis to retreat to Yorktown, effectively ensuring a victory for the new American Colonies.
Greene County is the third-largest geographical county in the state, although it ranks far from the top in terms of population.
The county seat of Greene County is Bloomfield, which was founded in 1864, after the Van Slyke family donated land for the establishment of a county government.
Greene County also has claim to a portion of the Naval Surface Warfare Center - Crane, which was originally an ammunition depot for the United States Navy.
